Another Way to Help Pay for College

Upromise.com has been helping students earn and save money for college since 2001. Here’s how it works. Students, parent, grandparents, or any relative goes to Upromise.com and signs up to become a member. Members register their store loyalty cards (if the store has one) and their credit cards. It’s completely free. Members can register one or several credit cards with Upromise. Every time one of those credit cards and a store loyalty card is swiped, a report is sent to Upromise and the appropriate amount is credited to the member’s Upromise account. Upromise members are sent notices about products that can provide 1 percent to 5 percent of the purchase amount in rewards. Members also can shop online by logging on to upromise.com, then clicking on any of the more than 600 partner companies ranging from Bed, Bath & Beyond to Walmart. Also, more than 8,000 restaurants across the country are partners. In addition, Food Lion, Winn-Dixie and Publix are Upromise partners, as is the CVS drug store chain. Upromise is just another way for students to make college more affordable, especially in this challenging economic climate. Florida is the biggest market for the savings program. There is no limit to how much members can accumulate in their Upromise accounts. Members, in aggregate, have saved more than $475 million since 2001. Individually it depends on how much people use the service and how diligent they are about making sure they use companies that are Upromise partners. This program might be for you.

Tips for SAT Test Day Readiness

As the December SAT approaches, here are some tips that will help you do your best.

Before Test Day

Get organized:

	Make sure you have two No. 2 pencils and a soft eraser. Pens and mechanical pencils are not allowed.
	Have your SAT Admission Ticket and acceptable photo ID ready.
	Check your calculator and put fresh batteries in it.
	Bring a watch to time yourself. Use a watch that has no audible alarm—separate timers are not allowed.
	Prepare snacks to take. A healthy snack will help keep you alert during the test.

Prepare yourself like an athlete:

	Get plenty of sleep the night before the test. Your brain will work better if you are rested.
	Eat a good breakfast that morning.

On Test Day

Leave your cell phone at home. If your phone rings during testing, it could cost you your scores!

	We strongly advise you not to bring a cell phone or any other prohibited electronic device to the test center. If your electronic device makes any noise, or you are seen using it at any time—including breaks—you may be dismissed immediately, your scores may be canceled, and the device may be confiscated.
	This policy applies to any prohibited digital and/or electronic device such as a BlackBerry®, pager, iPod®, MP3 player, camera or other photographic equipment, or separate timers of any kind.

In bad weather, check to see if your test center is open.

	Tune in to your local media, like you do for school closing announcements.
	Check online for a list of test center closings.

Leave early. Get to the test center no later than 7:45 a.m., unless otherwise noted on your Admission Ticket.

Go to the center listed on your Admission Ticket.

	Even if it’s not your first choice, you are only guaranteed admission to the test center on your Admission Ticket.
	You will be charged an extra fee if you go to a different test center, and a seat may not be available for you.

Arrange your ride home ahead of time. Your testing may end a little before or after the times listed below. If you are testing with extended time, ask the supervisor for approximate finish times.

For the SAT, plan on being picked up at approximately 12:45 p.m.

For SAT Subject Tests, plan on being picked up at the following approximate times:

- 9:45 a.m. for one test

- 11:15 a.m. for two tests

- 12:30 p.m. for three tests

Taking the Test

Make sure you use a No. 2 pencil. Follow the instructions on your answer sheet when filling it out.

Keep focused:

	Use breaks to eat or drink any snacks you have brought with you.
	Pace yourself. Each question counts the same. Don’t spend too much time on any one question.

The Price of College Continues to Rise But is Still a Great Investment

This is a good news / badnews story. First the bad news (let’s get it out of the way). A recent 2008 survey published by The CollegeBoard showed that the overall cost of college continues to rise. Tution, fees, room and board at public four year colleges averaged $10,471 in 1998. That rose to $ 14,333 in 2008. In Private colleges it rose from $27, 580 to $34,132. Now the good news. International Students are Seeking Admission to US Universities in Greater Numbers

Students from other countries love America. It turns out that more and more international students are seeking admissions to American universities. After 9-11 foreign visas dried up a bit and fewer international students applied. Many probably thought that they could not get a student visa. That was not the case. Now that some time has passed, the international students are once again seeking education in America. This means two things. First, American students must internalize the inconvenient truth that they are competing in a global market both when it comes to education and jobs. They have to be on top. Secondly, it means that American education is still a valuable commodity in the word market. For all of its faults, American education has great value in the eyes of the world. It is something to be proud of.
